This started as a really quick and dirty sketch based off of a piece of stock photography.
Normally, I do at least one refined sketch before I try painting something but, for some reason, none of the subsequent sketches looked as good to me as this rough did.
Despite the problems with it, I decided to use this as my base.

A quick scan after the initial set of washes were put down. The main figure and the grave stones are covered in removable masking fluid. Only the tree has any real form at this point.

The tree is mostly done and I've started filling in the form of the rocks and ground. At this point, my main colors are Paynes Grey, Aquarmarine Blue and Burnt Umber. Just about everyting except the grass and sky is some combination of those three paints.

Time to remove the masking fluid. I haven't completely finished the foreground yet. I find that I need more than one "active" area in a painting so that I can let one area dry while working on another.

Very close to done. I still have some small things to fix, like her hands, but this is pretty close to what the finished painting looks like.
